Germany does not have a recognised dual apprenticeship called Buchhalter/in. The closest accounting route is Steuerfachangestellte/r, a three-year programme focused on bookkeeping, payroll, tax returns and annual accounts. Industriekaufmann/-frau and Kaufmann/-frau für Büromanagement also last three years, but accounting is only part of their training.
Ausbildung is most useful for school leavers and career starters who want a German vocational qualification. An accountant with a degree or several years of experience may reach the German labour market faster through targeted Weiterbildung, especially if they already live in Germany.
How dual Ausbildung works
Germany’s dual system has two learning locations: the employer and the vocational school (Berufsschule). The employer pays the trainee, provides practical training and signs the Ausbildungsvertrag. The school teaches commercial, legal and occupation-specific subjects. The programme ends with an examination organised by the competent chamber. These principles are set out in the Federal Employment Agency’s overview of dual training.
All three routes covered below normally take 36 months. Training usually starts in August or September. Large employers may close applications 9–12 months before the start date, so a non-EU applicant who also needs certificate recognition and a visa should begin early.
Three Ausbildung routes into accounting
Steuerfachangestellte/r: the direct route
The BERUFENET profile for Steuerfachangestellte defines it as a recognised three-year dual occupation. Trainees process invoices, receipts and bank statements, prepare bookkeeping records, support payroll, work on tax returns, check tax assessments and assist with annual accounts. Most training companies are tax advisory practices.
This is an established profession, not a niche workaround. BStBK’s 2025 professional statistics record 17,081 active Steuerfachangestellte training contracts and another 2,113 people in retraining. The work is close to German tax law, so B2 German is a practical target even though the visa threshold is usually B1.
Industriekaufmann/-frau: accounting inside an industrial company
Industriekaufleute rotate through purchasing, sales, logistics, human resources, controlling and finance. The official Industriekaufmann profile lists a three-year duration. In accounting departments, trainees may post transactions, prepare cost data, monitor budgets and support management reporting.
BERUFENET’s 2026 example for the metal and electrical industry gives gross monthly training pay of €1,243–€1,373 in year 1, €1,298–€1,408 in year 2 and €1,379–€1,489 in year 3. These are sector examples, not guaranteed rates for every employer.
Kaufmann/-frau für Büromanagement: the broad office route
This three-year programme covers office administration, correspondence, purchasing, invoices and payment monitoring. The official Büromanagement profile shows how strongly pay depends on the employer: in year 1, the examples range from €724–€1,130 in crafts to €1,243–€1,373 in industry, while the public-sector example is €1,368 gross per month.
The route can lead to accounts payable, accounts receivable or payroll support, but it is less specialised than Steuerfachangestellte. A graduate who wants to move into financial accounting will normally need relevant work experience or additional training.
Education and German requirements
School certificates
German law does not prescribe one school qualification for every dual Ausbildung; the employer chooses whom to hire. Commercial firms often prefer a strong secondary-school certificate, solid mathematics and accurate written German. A foreign certificate may still need recognition by the authority in the relevant federal state. The Federal Employment Agency’s guidance for foreign applicants explains how to find the responsible recognition office through anabin.
German language
B1 German is normally required for the vocational-training visa unless the employer or school has already assessed the applicant or a preparatory language course applies. For accounting work, B2 is more realistic. Berufsschule lessons, tax rules, payroll documents, client emails and communication with authorities are mainly in German; English does not replace them.
Application documents
A complete application normally contains:
- a German-style CV with full education and employment history;
- a motivation letter written for the specific employer;
- school, university and employment certificates;
- certified translations when requested;
- a recognised German-language certificate;
- evidence of mathematics, Excel, bookkeeping or business skills.
Applicants who already hold a BCom, MCom, MBA, ACCA-related qualification or accounting degree should explain why they want a three-year entry-level programme. A German employer will want to see a clear reason for choosing Ausbildung instead of direct employment or a shorter adaptation course.
Visa rules for applicants from abroad
Visa with a signed training contract
Indian, Pakistani and most other non-EU citizens need a national visa before beginning company-based training. Under the Make it in Germany visa guidance, the main requirements are a confirmed training place, the required German level and sufficient funds.
For company-based training in 2026, a salary of at least €1,048 gross or €822 net per month is treated as sufficient to cover living costs. If the contract pays less, the applicant must normally cover the difference with a blocked account or a formal declaration of commitment. A school-based programme requires proof of at least €959 net per month.
Visa for searching for a training place
Applicants without a contract can consider the training-place search visa. It requires B1 German, a school certificate that provides access to higher education, an age below 35 and proof of €1,091 per month in 2026. The permit is valid for up to 9 months and allows up to 20 working hours per week plus up to 2 weeks of trial work.
India and Pakistan
Applicants living in India should follow the vocational-training checklist published by the German mission in India. It requires, among other documents, the signed training contract, training plan, CV, education certificates, German proof and health-insurance evidence. Applicants living in Pakistan should use the vocational-training information from the German mission in Pakistan and follow the procedure for their consular district. Embassy checklists can change and take priority over old agency instructions.
How much does Ausbildung pay in 2026?
The statutory minimum depends on the training year. BIBB’s 2026 minimum-pay notice sets the following monthly gross amounts for contracts that begin in 2026:
- year 1: €724;
- year 2: €854;
- year 3: €977;
- year 4, where applicable: €1,014.
Collective agreements and employer policies often produce higher pay, as the industrial examples above show. The visa calculation is separate: a legally valid training salary can still be too low to satisfy the 2026 living-cost threshold. Rent, deposit, transport and the period before the first salary must also be financed.
Applying from India, Pakistan or another non-EU country
- Choose the official occupation name. Search for Steuerfachangestellte/r, Industriekaufmann/-frau or Kaufmann/-frau für Büromanagement rather than “accounting Ausbildung”.
- Reach B1 German for the visa and aim for B2 before the first day of tax or accounting training.
- Ask the employer or vocational school whether your certificate needs recognition and arrange translations.
- Apply 9–12 months before the intended August or September start.
- Check the contract’s salary, city, probation period, training plan and responsible chamber.
- Compare the salary with the visa threshold and calculate any blocked-account gap.
- Use the visa checklist of the German mission responsible for your place of residence.
A placement promise is not an Ausbildung contract. Verify the company and do not pay an intermediary merely for arranging a training position.
Ausbildung or Weiterbildung?
The decisive question is whether the applicant needs a complete German occupation or only German accounting knowledge and software.
| Factor | Ausbildung | Weiterbildung |
| Best for | School leavers and career starters | Experienced professionals already living in Germany |
| Duration | 36 months for all three routes | Varies; DWW programme: 7.5 months |
| Income or cost | Monthly training allowance | Tuition; approved funding may cover the cost |
| German | B1 visa rule; B2 practical target | Often B1–B2, depending on the programme |
| Result | Recognised German vocational qualification | Targeted skills and programme certificates |
| Visa relevance | A valid contract can support a training visa | Not automatically a visa or relocation route |
Weiterbildung for people already living in Germany
Weiterbildung is usually the more efficient route for an experienced accountant who already lives in Germany but lacks HGB, German tax rules, payroll practice or DATEV. It does not provide the same qualification as a three-year dual Ausbildung.
The Federal Employment Agency’s Bildungsgutschein page states that approved training costs can be covered when the course is necessary to end unemployment or prevent it. Approval follows an individual consultation, and both the programme and provider must meet the funding requirements. A Bildungsgutschein is not a general visa or relocation programme for people applying from abroad.
The DWW Akademie accounting programme lasts 7.5 months and is designed for international residents with B1–B2 German. It combines financial, payroll and balance-sheet accounting with HGB, taxation, DATEV, Lexware, MS Office and job-search preparation. Eligible participants may receive full funding through a Bildungsgutschein; the decision belongs to the Agentur für Arbeit.
Jobs and salary after Ausbildung
A Steuerfachangestellte qualification can lead directly to work in a tax advisory practice. The Federal Employment Agency’s Entgeltatlas reports a nationwide median of €3,458 gross per month for full-time skilled roles in this occupational group; the lower quartile is €2,820 and the upper quartile €4,255. These are 2024 employment data, not guaranteed starting salaries.
Industriekaufleute and Büromanagement graduates can enter accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, commercial administration or controlling, depending on their company experience. Additional training can lead to Finanzbuchhalter/in or Bilanzbuchhalter roles.
Non-EU graduates who complete recognised vocational training in Germany may receive up to 18 months to find qualified employment. The official post-training residence guidance also states that a settlement permit can become possible after two years of qualified work following German vocational training, provided the other legal conditions are met.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct Buchhalter Ausbildung?
No. Steuerfachangestellte/r is the closest recognised route. Industriekaufmann/-frau and Kaufmann/-frau für Büromanagement include accounting but train for broader occupations.
Can applicants from India or Pakistan apply?
Yes. They need an employer, sufficient German, the required education documents, proof of financing and the correct national visa.
Is B1 German enough?
B1 usually meets the visa rule. B2 is a more realistic working level for tax law, bookkeeping terminology and Berufsschule exams.
Is Ausbildung free?
Company-based Ausbildung normally has no tuition fee and pays a monthly allowance. The trainee still pays living, relocation and document costs.
Can a degree shorten the three-year programme?
Not automatically. The employer and competent chamber must approve any reduction. Experienced accountants should compare this option with direct employment and Weiterbildung.
Can a Bildungsgutschein finance a move to Germany?
No general entitlement exists for applicants abroad. The voucher is issued through the German employment system after an individual assessment and should not be treated as a migration route.
Conclusion
Steuerfachangestellte/r is the clearest Ausbildung route into accounting. Industriekaufmann/-frau offers stronger access to finance and controlling in industry, while Büromanagement provides a broader administrative base. For applicants abroad, the contract, German level and visa financing determine whether the plan is workable. For experienced professionals already living in Germany, a focused Weiterbildung may replace three years of entry-level training with several months of local accounting preparation.
